Antiviral drugs for influenza:: Tamiflu® past, present and future

Two antiviral drugs that are currently available for the treatment of influenza are effective against all strains of the virus, if used correctly. These are the neuraminidase inhibitors, zanamivir (Relenza((R))) and oseltamivir (Tamiflu((R))). These drugs are the result of basic research performed over a 60-year period by many people around the world. They were deliberately synthesized from a knowledge of the x-ray crystal structure of influenza virus neuraminidase. This article provides a brief historical account of some of the scientific events that lead to their creation.
