Correlation of P and S-waves with cutting specific energy and dominant properties of volcanic and carbonate rocks

摘要
The velocities of compressional waves (P) and shear waves (S) were measured using the high frequency ultrasonic pulse technique with Pundit Plus instrument for volcanic and carbonate rocks. Quantitative determinations of a wide range of textural, mechanical, intact rock properties and cutting specific energy were made. The ability of the technique to provide a mathematical characterisation of the ultrasonic velocities in specific rock may prove to be of value to rock engineers. The velocities of Pand S waves were measured using the high frequency ultrasonic pulse technique. Mineral type, content and grain size were determined in their thin sections using polarizing microscope, and total silica content was determined by chemical analysis using an automatic X-ray machine. The prediction equations for the P and S-wave velocity will help the engineers and researchers involved in rock properties determination.
