Characterization of dielectric elastomer planar actuators

A 50 mu m-thick film of an acrylic dielectric elastomer was used to realise planar electroactive polymer actuators with compliant electrode materials. Applying DC voltage for two seconds, the isotonic transverse strain, the isometric transverse stress and the driving current were measured for four electrode materials (thickened electrolyte solution, graphite spray, carbon grease, graphite powder), four transverse prestress values and different excitation voltages. An isotonic transverse strain of 6% at 1950V and an isometric transverse stress of 49KPa at 1700V were registered. Actuators performances are strongly determined by the electrode material and the prestress value.
