Preparation Method of an Antibiotic Bone Cement Rod and Analysis of Its Efficacy in Treating Long Tubal Bone Osteomyelitis

Objective: The present study introduced a new method of preparing intraoperative antibiotic bone cement rods, and evaluated its initial clinical efficacy in treating chronic osteomyelitis of long tubal bones. Methods: The status of 13 cases with chronic osteomyelitis of long tubal bones complicated with bone nonunion was retrospectively analyzed, and received debridement of the infection site, sinus tract incision, marrow widening and imbedding therapy using an antibiotic bone cement rod. Results: All patients were followed-up, with an average follow up time of 20 months. All infection was effectively controlled and no recurrent infection occurred, and the soft tissue sinus tract was healed. The fracture of 10 patients was healed, while the fracture of three patients partially healed. Conclusion: The preparationmethod of the antibiotic bone cement rod is easy, feasible and relatively economical, and is an effective treatment method for chronic osteomyelitis of long tubal bones.
