Risk factors for musculoskeletal disorders in healthcare professionals: A systematic review

The objective of the study was to review the current literature in order to learn the methods of study, measurement tools used, different disciplines evaluated, risk factors and other findings related to musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) among healthcare professionals (HCP). A systematic review of the published literature was conducted to find out the ergonomic risk factors among HCPs and suggested recommendations. A 4 step review was done. 284 articles were found by a keyword search in MEDLINE which was reduced to 29 after a 4 step review. Almost all the HCPs had a high prevalence of MSD irrespective to their field and specialty. The majority of studies focused on a self administered questionnaire. Very few experimental studies and no randomised controlled trials were found during the review. Most of the studies attempted to identify the risk factors of MSD in HCPs.
