The diastereomeric phenylglycino-derived unsaturated delta-lactams trans-3 and cis-3 react with dienes with exo facial diastereoselectivity to give the corresponding tricyclic adducts, which were ultimately converted to enantiomeric cis-hydroisoquinolines.
