Overview of the management of side effects of modern immunotherapies

With the approval of atezolizumab in combination with nab-paclitaxel for the treatment of metastatic triple-negative breast cancer, immunotherapy has entered the center stage of gynecological oncology. Based on the mode of action, immunotherapy is accompanied by a spectrum of novel and often unfamiliar side effects. This article reviews the etiology, the spectrum of side effects and the principles of management of such immune-related adverse events. Timely detection and early intervention are the mainstay of the management. Corticosteroids form the basis for immunosuppression. Profound knowledge as well as a good clarification and communication with patients are the prerequisites for the successful management of immune-related adverse events.
