Scientific applications have always been at the forefront of computing, starting with the very first computers. Until recently, however, scientific programmers have largely stayed away from the mainstream of software engineering discussions. The scientific programming community is paying increasing attention to software engineering and component technology. The ongoing cross-fertilization between these two disciplines are discussed. Scientists are slowly coming to appreciate the merits of object oriented languages, unit testing, sophisticated source control systems, and other modern techniques. From a scientists perspective, the most important thing about reusing a component is not the time saved, but the reliability gained.
