Buckling restrained braces have greatly improved compression resistance compared to general braces due to the concrete restraint effect of steel tube, and when subjected to repeated loads such as seismic force, a stable hysteresis loop is created and has a large energy dissipation capacity. Despite such excellent performance, it is difficult to apply to buildings due to problems such as a long manufacturing period and excessive connection design due to heavy weight. In this study, we propose a buckling restrained brace reinforced with steel plates to secure workability and lightness, and a new design formula to check whether buckling occurs. The validity of the proposed formula was secured using the results of finite element analysis, and the proposed buckling restrained brace showed better performance and 9% lighter than the existing buckling restrained brace.
