The present contribution examines three library catalogues: the catalogue of the Abbey of Saint Victor compiled by Claude de Grandrue (1513/14), the fictional catalogue of that same library in the seventh chapter of Francois Rabelais's Pantagruel (1532-1542) and Johann Fischart's Catalogus catalogorum perpetuo durabilis (1590). It investigates the epistemological, institutional, and social contexts of each catalogue and the relationship between the texts.
