摘要
This paper highlights the concerns related to shrinking of global forest area, currently 9 million hectares per year, and the importance of Information Technology (IT) in sustainable forest management. Reference is made to recent developments in IT. Results from a case study involving Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and customized interfaces are presented. The study was developed as standalone desktop application and client-server interface, based on Visual Basic, MapObjects (ESRI), and MapObjects Internet Server. C-Whiz (Ketron), a general-purpose linear optimizer, was selected to serve as the engine of the harvest-scheduling module.
