Inductively Coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) is widely used for the determination of cobalt and chromium in biological samples such as whole blood, however the presence of spectroscopic interference can complicate the measurement of certain isotopes. A robust analytical method was developed for the determination of Co and Cr concentration of whole blood sampled from 207 patients that have received a metal based hip articulation. The level of Co and Cr in these patient samples was considerably higher than that found in healthy volunteers.
