Mobile Solutions and Applications for Smart Government

Purpose - World over there are number of e-Governance initiatives adopted by municipalities at local level to sectoral departments at sub-national and national level. These initiatives have brought improved performance in service delivery, citizen participation and stakeholder consultations. With increasing ICT applications and adoptions at local level, the municipalities / cities have delved into further integration of mobile applications for improved service delivery and citizen engagement. Design/methodology/approach - The paper highlights some of the case studies from selected developed and developing countries for mobile applications for improved service delivery and citizen engagement. The case studies are drawn from selected award winning municipalities for their innovative mobile solutions. The research analysis is based on analysis of municipal websites and integration of mobile solutions for smart government. Originality/value - The paper discusses some of the trends in mobile applications at municipal level for improved governance system. The trends from selected case studies are highlighted in detail in terms of areas of applications, extent of adoption and participation, key challenges and further opportunities in areas of smart government for improved service delivery and citizen engagement through mobile applications. Practical implications - The paper makes a contribution to existing body of knowledge on the applications and integration of ICT for smart government. The paper furthermore presents recommendations to city planners, decision makers, technologies and other stakeholders on various options for integrating mobile solutions for smart government.
