摘要
The present study takes as its point of origin Voltaire's statement that discredits all philosophers preceding Locke who could only write what he calls "novels of the soul". It is the purpose of this paper to establish how this judgement has indeed a basis, but not the one implied by Voltaire. Malebranche's cardinal idea that we have no idea of our soul and that it has no language compells us to express it in a narrative form. Some motifs shall be examined here in order to show that this "unfinished novel" finds its true meaning once it is situated within the story of salvation.
