Structural chemistry, magnetic and electrical properties of ternary rare-earth nickel phosphides, R20Ni42P30 (R=Ce, Sm)

摘要
We have investigated the magnetic and electrical transport properties of two ternary compounds R20Ni42P30 (R=Ce, Sm), which crystallize in the hesaronal Sm20Ni41.6P30 structure type, space group P6(3)/m. Both samples undergo magnetic transitions below 50 It. The cerium atom adopts an intermediate valence state (v similar to3.8). The temperature dependence of the resistivity, p, of Sm20Ni42P30 resembles the shape of a simple non-magnetic metal, whereas p(T) of Ce20Ni42P30 reveals the typical feature of a Kondo lattice.
