A L-shaped shorted-end fed broadband slot antenna is proposed for wireless communications in this paper. The antenna is composed of a L-shaped shorted-end probe, one tapered slot. The whole antenna circuit is fabricated using the single layer FR4 substrate. The return loss of the antenna is more than 10dB over a frequency range of 1.54-2.96GHz. A dual polarized antenna with two orthogonal antenna arrays is accordingly proposed and designed, and it achieves a return loss of 10dB from 1.65-2.9GHz, an isolation of 40dB and gain of 8.5, 10 and 11.5dBi at 1.7, 2.2 and 2.7GHz, respectively. Finally, a prototype dual-unit array dual-polarized antenna is fabricated and measured to prove the validity of the predicted results. Thus, the developed antenna array has been confirmed to be suitable for long term evaluation (LTE) wireless communications (e.g. 2G, 3G and 4G).
