Natural radioactivity measurements in rock samples of Ondo and Ekiti states in Nigeria

The concentrations of the natural radionuclides namely K-40, Th-232 U-238 in 44 different rock samples around Ondo and Ekiti states have been determined using an Nal (TL) detector coupled to a computerized ACCUSPEC MCA (Multichannel Analyzer) Installation. Gamma spectrometric analyses were performed and the concentrations obtained for each of the radionuclides expressed in Bq kg(-1) are 4.751 +/- 0.091, 13.376 +/- 0.0197, and 3.308 +/- 0.017 for K-40, U-238 and Th-232, respectively. The mean absorbed dose rate is 8.139 +/- 0.427 nGy h(-1) at 1.0 m above the ground level. These results indicate that the radioactivity in these rocks is very low. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd.
