摘要
Creation and diffusion of knowledge represent important prerequisites for innovation development and production of goods with high added value. With respect to innovation performance the big differences among regions can be observed, because each region has different conditions and potential for launching and diffusion of innovations. There exist some regions in Europe that can be called as innovation leaders or knowledge and innovation centres. For example Baden-Wurttemberg in Germany, Tampere in Finland or Noord Brabant in Netherland belong to the group of such regions. The aim of this article is to analyse the causes of success of excellent knowledge regions in Europe. The analysis is carried out on the basis of case studies of selected regions. Among often factors of their success it is possible to put the existence of big innovative company, quality universities and strong research and development. Also the government support and good proinnovative environment are important preconditions. The case studies confirm that the success also depends on historical development and influence of chance.
