Effect of Sn and Y addition on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of hot-extruded Mg-9Li-3Al alloy

摘要
Mg-9Li-3Al (wt%) alloys with addition of Sn and Y were prepared by vacuum melting followed by hot-extrusion process. Microstructure evolution of Mg-9Li-3Al alloys with Sn and Y addition was characterized by using optical microscopy, scanning electrical microscopy, transmission electrical microscopy, X-ray diffraction and mechanical properties were examined by tensile test. MgLi2Sn and MgLi2Al particles are observed in Mg-9Li-3Al-2Sn alloys and significant strength improvement is obtained due to precipitation hardening. The ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of Mg-9Li-3Al-2Sn is 251 MPa, which is the highest among all the studied Mg-9Li-3Al alloys, while the highest elongation (43.8%) at room temperature is obtained in Mg-9Li-3Al-2Y.
