Self-injurious behaviour without suicidal intent is quite common among adolescents and young adults, and indicates severe psychological strain. Physicians and medical staff (an be the first to disclose the disorder and arrange therapeutic support. This article introduces the characteristics of self-injurious behaviour, lists frequent reasons and risk factors which cause this behaviour, and depicts possible consequences for clinical practice. Warning signals and therapeutic approaches are considered.
