Study of highly conductive graphite foams in thermal management applications

An experimental study was conducted to investigate the forced convection heat transfer in microcellular graphite foam of high thermal conductivity. The purpose was to evaluate the heat transfer of graphite foams and analyze the effect of material's structure on heat transfer enhancement. The experimental set up was designed to establish an adiabatic channel with constant heat flux at the bottom, which can be used to evaluate the heat removal of the tested materials. The test results of graphite foam heat sink with fins and hole structures were compared with conventional aluminum heat sinks of the same configurations. The local temperatures increase along the test section and decrease with Reynolds number, while the Nusselt number distributions exhibit the opposite trends for all tested heat sinks. Some dimensionless parameters used in the calculations are defined before the results, which showed better heat transfer performances by graphite foam heat sinks.
