Lime kiln upgrade project at Prince Albert

From April-June 1993 the Weyerhaeuser Canada Limited pulp mill in Prince Albert, SK conducted a major upgrade of the lime kiln. This upgrade included installing the first FL Smidth Compax lime kiln product cooler in the world, a new CVS kiln burner, a new GL&V Ontario lime mud filter with the sequential blow cleaning system. As part of the upgrade a new feed belt conveyor, new feed screw, feed spirals and back end hood and ducting were installed. Dual layer refractory was installed in the kiln burning zone and a disturbed control system with all new instrumentation and a new flame safety system was installed. The benefits of the project include a reduction in heat and dust around the lime kiln discharge area which has reduced health and safety hazards in the area, an increase in lime kiln production which has lead to a reduction in purchased lime for the recausticizing plant with reduced lime mud being sent to landfill and reduced natural gas consumption.
