Temperature dependences of quantum yields of pyrene triplet states and radical ions produced on fluorescence quenching of pyrene by dibutyl phthalate in acetonitrile were studied by nanosecond laser photolysis. The apparent activation energy of formation of the radical ions was found to be -2.8 kJ/mol, so that it could not be explained in terms of a luminescence quenching mechanism suggesting complete direct electron transfer. It was shown that the main pathway of formation of pyrene radical ions in the system is the activationless dissociation of the pyrene-dibutyl phthalate exciplex produced upon quenching.
