Annual variation in the Earth's magnetic field

Data from the worldwide observatory network and OERSTED and CHAMP satellites have been treated by the combined spherical harmonic (SHA) and natural orthogonal component (NOC) analyses to isolate the annual variation in the geomagnetic field. A relationship has been established between the annual variation and solar activity: the amplitude of the annual variation at a solar maximum is twice as large as at a minimum; the phase of the annual variation does not change during the solar cycle. It is shown that the field of the annual variation is asymmetric about the equator. A space-time model of the annual variation, based on satellite data for the interval from August 2001 through July 2002, has been constructed for the fist time.
