Chemical composition of the essential oil of Senecio leucostachys baker

The essential oil obtained by steam. distillation from the leaves of cultivated Senecio leucostachys Baker. was examined by GC and GC-MS. The yield of total volatile was 0.8 % (w/w). A total of thirty-one compounds were characterized representing of about 98.6% of the total components detected. Based on the analysis of essential oil, the components were classified in three groups. Oil was characterized by a high content of monoterpenes which composed 54.7 % of the oil. The major components were sabinene (20.7%), alpha-phellandrene (19.7 %), germacrene D (10.8 %) and beta-caryophyllene (8.2%). Other components present in appreciable amounts were bicyclogermacrene (4.0.%), benzyl benzoate (3.2 %), alpha-cedrene (2.6 %) and (E)-beta-ocimen (2.2 %).
