Laser optical systems are non-imaging applications. The paper presents the design of an original optical system meant to work with a laser cutting machine. The typical assemblies of such systems are the expander and the focusing objective. All lenses are designed as best shape lenses in order to minimize the residual spherical aberration. The entire calculus is worked out by means of original software, written as a VB application. Two solutions of objectives are assumed to be suitable - a spherical one and a hyperbolic one. Both solutions are thoroughly analyzed and specific parameters such as spot size and shape, depth of focus and diffraction limited character is discussed.
