Determination of volatile organic compounds in wastewater by gas chromatography.

Static headspace and activated charcoal badge are two sampling methods allowing to analyse volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in wastewater for the first one and in confined atmosphere for the second one. Static headspace technique applied to the determination of VOCs in a a wastewater system show variation of concentrations from 5 to 500 nL L(-1) in day-time. These fluctuations, which rise to a maximum between 12h00 and 18h00, are especially perceptible for dichloromethane, toluene and xylenes. Results obtained in parallel with the badge method reveal a correlation between concentrations measured in wastewater and those observed in the sewer atmosphere.
