On the Performance of Multiuser Beam Selection at Base Station and User Arrays in mm-Wave Systems

In this paper, we consider performance analysis of multiuser beam selection for downlink in a millimeter wave (mm-wave) system, in which a base station (BS) and users are equipped with antenna arrays, where channels are characterized by few paths. Based on analytical results from the performance analysis as well as simulation results, it is shown that the performance characteristics of beam selection in mm-wave systems are different from those in conventional systems of lower carrier frequencies (e.g., under 3 GHz) that have rather rich scattering environments. For example, in mm-wave systems, a better throughput can be achieved by increasing the spatial multiplexing gain with more beams used simultaneously as beams are narrow and do not cause severe inter-beam interference.
