Phosphorus fractions in reservoir sediments

A phosphorus fractionation scheme was applied to the sediments of 13 reservoirs in Sardinia (Italy) with the purpose of relating the fractional composition of sediment phosphorus to the sediment characteristics. Total phosphorus (TP), NH4Cl-P, NaOH-P, HCl-P and Res-P were measured, as well as sediment dry weight (DW), loss on ignition (LOI) and total iron (Fe). TP concentrations in the reservoir sediments ranged between 505 and 3089 mu g P g(-1) DW. On average 0.5% of the sediment TP was NH4Cl extractable, 37% NaOH extractable, and 23% HCl extractable, with the remaining 39,5% being residual phosphorus. The molar ratio between Fe and TP in the surface sediment ranged between 4.5 and 22.7, with the highest values in the lakes being very high in Fe, indicating a high phosphorus retention capacity in the sediments. Res-P was significantly and positively; correlated with LOI, indicating that organic matter (on average 7%) is another important phosphorus-immobilizing factor in the reservoir sediments.
