Ballistic performances of microcellular SiOC ceramic foams were tested in the hypervelocity regime using a high-shot-repetition-rate light-gas gun. The ceramic foam morphology was also characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and an image analysis software. The fabrication method was developed for microcellular SiOC foams which produce a highly porous open cell ceramic foam, with a cell size of 7.8 ± 1.5 μm and a bulk density of 0.359 ± 0.016 g cm-3. It was observed that the lightweight microcellular SiOC foams, produced from a preceramic polymer, were successfully used as components in hypervelocity impact shields for spacecrafts and satellities.
