STANDARDIZATION OF FURNITURE DESIGN AND PRODUCTION IN TURKEY

Furniture production, as one of the biggest needs of daily life, is a manufacturing area in which standardization is required. The furniture industry has been an important production area in recent years in Turkey as well as in the world. Over time, the furniture industry has become one of the important arms of export. The most important tool to achieve profits and efficiencies obtained in the production of furniture is to maintain quality control and production standards in the fields such as design, manufacture, application, sales and marketing. Maintenance of standardization in furniture provides multipurpose and more efficient use of furniture, flexibility in use. In addition, standardization in furniture allows mass production. The development of standardizationhas caused furniture production to pass from small workshops to large enterprises. Continuous improvement of construction and material technology requires renewal and standardization of tools and equipment. The expectations of individuals from a piece of furniture are basic factors such as functionality, ease of use, durability, aesthetics and health. In order to provide all these features for an ideal piece of furniture, it should be designed in a way to sufficiently correspond to the requirements of use starting from the design phase and can fulfil all the expected functions. For this, it must be produced with the appropriate standards. While furniture design and production in Turkey were originally based on Turkish Standards Institution standards, it is observed that the European Union's standards on design, production, quality, control and service are due to the increase of external relations today and factors such as modernization and export. In the scope of this study, after brief information concerning the development of the furniture industry as an important branch of industry in Turkey, information about the standards of furniture design, production, quality and service pioneering the development of the Turkish furniture industry will be given. The standardization relationship in furniture design and production and the use of these standards and their properties referring to the SITC classification as well as TSE, ISO, EN, CEN, DIN standards will be analyzed the case of Turkey. Therefore, a useful written resource on the importance and impact of standardization in furniture design and in production Turkey is being created.
