The classic stress-strain profile of a time dependent material is viewed as a transport (momentum) process in terms of nonlinear complex system dynamics. The macroscopic phenomena of elastic to plastic transition, yield point elongation, strain hardening and necking to fracture evolve in a dynamic model from instabilities at the microscopic level. Three types of model instabilities (related to force, length, time) are examined. Analysis points out striking similarities with other transport processes with potential application of this approach to solder micromechanical behavior under slow deformation. Computational details and model assumptions are discussed.
