Nanomaterials have one or more dimensions in the range of 1 to 100 nm. Due to the greatly increased surface area they display very different characteristics front their large bulk forms which create now application opportunities. They have been important in materials science and in the field of medicine. Some nanomaterials, e.g. bacterial cellulose (BC), can be isolated from microbial sources. The most efficient BC producers are G. xylinus strains. BC and BC-based composites are excellent nanobiomaterials and have already been widely used in medicine and other areas.
