Expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its naturally occurring antisense in breast cancer samples

摘要
Background: The brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has been implicated in the pathology of CNS disorders as well as cancer. A long non-coding RNA has been distinguished that is transcribed from the anti-sense (AS) strand of BDNF locus. Method: We evaluated expression of BDNF and BDNF-AS in breast cancer and adjacent non-cancerous tissues (ANCTs) using real-time PCR technique. Result: Expression of BDNF-AS was associated with both tumor grade and mitotic rate. BDNF expression was significantly lower in estrogen receptor (ER) positive samples compared with ER negative samples. Moreover, significant pairwise correlations were found between expressions of these genes in both tumoral tissues and ANCTs. Conclusion: We provided evidences for participation of BDNF and its naturally occurring anti-sense in the pathogenesis of breast cancer.
