Thiol/Disulphide homeostasis in children with acute pyelonephritis and cystitis Thiol/Disulphide in pyelonephritis and cystitis

Aim: Urinary tract infection is frequently seen in children, and in recurrent cases, invasive methods such as scintigraphy may be required for prognosis. We aimed to investigate whether the thiol/disulfide homeostasis has any role or effect on acute pyelonephritis and cystitis in pediatric patients. Material and Methods: This case-control study was collected between June 2016 and June 2019. A total of 80 children (aged between 6 months and 17 years) participated in the study. Patient (80 children) demographics, serum and urine analyzes were collected. Results: A significant difference was found when ages, heights, weights, body temperature, diastolic blood pressure, hemoglobin. leukocyte, C reactive protein (CRP), urine analysis and albumin values were compared. No significant difference was observed in systolic blood pressure, platelets and in thiol, disulfide and ischemia modified albumin (IMA) values and thiol/disulfide related ratios when all groups were compared. We also could not found any correlations results between thlol/disulfide and other parameters. Discussion: Although there are meaningful results in many studies about thiol/disulfide homeostasis, we could not achieve the same results for urinary tract infection in our study. The pathophysiology of acute pyelonephritis and cystitis might not be related to the thiol/disulfide mechanism or does not cause enough change in the values of these parameters in the blood.
