Rare earth azatrane chemistry: Facile cleavage of THF to give a Y2Li3O cluster

Azatrane complexes with the [N(CH(2)CH(2)NSiMe(3))](3-) ligand are known for main group, transition, and actinide metals but, until now, not for the rare earths. Here we report the reaction of Li-3[N(CH(2)CH(2)NSiM(3))(3)] with YCl3 to give a remarkable Y2Li3 cluster containing not only a [N(CH(2)CH(2)NSiMe(3))(3)](3-) ligand but also fragments arising from a facile cleavage of THF solvent.
