Family therapy and individual therapy have been viewed as separate, and even competing, therapeutic approaches. This article reviews historical influences on the relationship between the two therapies and discusses how they can be seen as complementary approaches. The article reviews theoretical positions supporting the integration of the therapies and pragmatic challenges inherent in switching modalities. Case material illustrates the sequencing of these therapies in multimodal treatment plans.
