Damping and mechanical properties of nitrogen-containing Fe-Mn alloys

摘要
An effect of nitrogen on damping in Fe-Mn alloys is studied. It is shown that nitrogen provides unchanged value of damping capacity in the alloy Fe-17Mn (wt. %) in spite of a decrease in the fraction of the thermally-induced h.c.p. epsilon-martensite. This effect is attributed to an enhanced mobility of Shockley partials at the interface between the epsilon-martensite bands and residual austenite. At the same time nitrogen increases the yield and ultimate strengths at nearly the same value of plasticity of the Fe-14Mn alloy and increases plasticity of the Fe-17Mn alloy by more than three times.
