GENDER RELATIONS IN REGGAETON DISCOURSE AMONG ADOLESCENTS

Music can influence many facets of the personal and social life of young people, promoting the construction of common identities. In recent years, reggaeton has gone from being an expressive phenomenon of popular sectors to becoming a global sign of youth identity. Studies on reggaeton and youth have focused on investigating the supposed negative effects that listening to this type of music could have on the young population. But we also find proposals that highlight alternative readings to assess the gender issue in reggaeton. Our study resumes the analysis of the production of different focus groups with young people that have allowed us to explore the construction of gender relations among reggaeton consumers. We have identified three discursive repertoires that highlight the viral character of reggaeton, its educational capacity and the possibility that, paradoxically, it could become a feminist vehicle.
