A new method for the preparation of microcrystals of boehmite

摘要
The purpose of the paper is to describe a new method for the laboratory preparation of boehmite by the reaction of aluminum powder with water at 90degreesC in presence of iodine as an activator, replacing mercury. By transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the boehmite microcrystals appear as elongated plates with many jagged or dendritic sides, or long flat fibrils, also with dendritic sides. The morphology of the final product can be confused with cylindrical fibrillar pseudoboehmite only at low magnifications. These latter morphologies are different both from boehmite and from pseudoboehmite microcrystals prepared by other methods.
