摘要
Artificial sweeteners (ASs) have been widely accepted as indicators to evaluate wastewater (WW) impact. Although the characteristics of ASs align with ideal WW indicators, additional critical consideration is needed for future WW impact assessments using these compounds. For example, alternate inputs of ASs in the environment and possible attenuation of ASs under WW treatment processes and environmental conditions have been reported. Therefore, a re-assessment of the assumptions on the specificity and stability of ASs is required. Temporal and geographical variance of ASs in WW reinforces the importance of accurately characterizing waste sources before investigating their impact in receiving water bodies. Overall, sensitive and reliable analytical methods continue to facilitate the utilization of ASs as WW impact indicators for future investigations.
