REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN TOURISM MUNICIPALITIES OF MEXICO

This study presents an economic convergence analysis performed in tourism municipalities of Mexico during the 2000-2010 period, with per capita income data by the United Nations program, published in 2011. The objective was to understand the degree of interaction between the tourism vocation of these municipalities and their level of economic growth. As hypothesis it is suggested that geographic characteristics influence the inter-state disparities through time. The results show that there is a window of opportunity to take advantage of the different characteristics of tourism appeal in the country for the poorest municipalities to tend to grow at higher per capita product rates than wealthier municipalities.
