Catalyzing carbonization of polypropylene itself by supported nickel catalyst during combustion of polypropylene/clay nanocomposite for improving fire retardancy

摘要
The fire retardancy of polypropylene (PP)/organic-modified clay (OMC) nanocomposites compatibilized by maleated polypropylene (PP-MA) in the presence of supported nickel catalysts (Ni-Cat) were investigated. Values of heat release rate (HRR) peaks in both PP nanocomposites are 80-85% lower than that of PCM-01 and 50% lower than that of PCM-04. The HRR decreases gradually with combustion time. In the case of nanocomposite models used, no significant gas-phase mechanism of combustion can be found.
