Based on the date obtained from the three National Surveys on the physical exercise participation of China rural and urban residents from 1996 to 2007, the study finds that for 12 years since the implementation of the Program, though the number of residents participating in physical activity has increased, the sports proportion of the population has actually decreased In particular sports population of youth groups has significantly decreased Fitness walking running and other projects are popular, while the position of traditional training projects in the fitness exercises has declined The study proposes that urban and rural residents can be promoted to participate in physical exercise from the following aspects a) Developing public awareness of life-long sports to increase the proportion of sports population gradually, b) Giving positive guidance to youth groups in terms of the ways of living and working to promote their participation in physical exercise, c) Guiding people to take part in traditional ethnic sports projects to maintain the cultural characteristics of physical exercise, d) Continuing to strengthen the building of sports venues and make good use of those existing facilities to ease the conflicts between supply and demand of physical training venues
