Excitations of baryon resonances by electroweak probes will be reviewed with examples in one to two GeV excitation energy regions. Present problems of the quark shell model and lattice QCD calculations are documented by comparison with the extracted amplitudes in the framework of effective Lagrangian approaches that build on chiral dynamics and leading order tree-level structure. Problems of implementation of unitarity and realistic dynamics are quite severe beyond Delta (1232) resonance. Issues connected with the onset of perturbative QCD are also discussed. Lightcone methods are largely unexplored for these problems, but they hold powerful promise in the context of interpreting medium to large q(2) results extracted from experiments.
