This chapter introduces the physical concepts that underline the making and characterization of plastic-scintillator-based, slow neutron detectors. For this purpose, we shall introduce the physical concepts behind neutron emission, scattering, and absorption, as well as the interaction of reaction products inside the detection medium. Upon detailing the discrimination techniques between slow neutron-, and background radiation-induced pulses, we shall also be able to motivate the definition of the usual figures of merit for such detectors.
