The study of inhomogeneities effect on the insulation of a power cable

摘要
The paper deals with the 3D numerical modeling of the electric field within a power cable whose polyethylene insulation have inhomogeneities. Two types of inhomogeneities were taken into account: material impurity and gas filled cavity. The influence of physical properties, shape and geometrical dimensions of inhomogeneities on the electric field strength is analyzed. The maximum values of electric field obtained through simulations are compared to a reference value. Starting from a structural analysis of cable insulation, this study can be used in a thorough evaluation of electric field in order to prevent the power cable ageing or breakdown.
