摘要：
The goal of this communication is to survey the main questions related to analysis of shells of variable thickness. Special emphasis is put on how to carry out a dimensional reduction under general case, wherein the shell is given only by its shape with no clearly indicated edges. The so-called medial axis transformation (MAT) is proposed for this purpose.
