This article offers an assessment of Paul Tillich's claim to offer a restatement of the Reformers' doctrine of justification in the horizon of modernity. This provides the framework for a critical reconstruction of the fundamental structures of Tillich's theology. For his attempt at restating the Pauline doctrine of justification in the interpretation of the Reformation - this is the result of the critical examination - Tillich pays the price of losing the subject-matter of theology.
