Condensed media shock waves and detonations: equation of state and performance

Shock and detonation waves have the unique feature of attaining the final state at high density and temperature simultaneously. This allows the determination of intermolecular potentials and the equation of state, and the investigation of other important physical phenomena in condensed matter under such conditions. Some of the important models of equations of states used in the field are reviewed. This covers empirical and semi-empirical equations of state, the analytical representation of the thermodynamic properties of dense fluids, and variational methods for computing the thermodynamic properties of a multicomponent multiphase mixture. Equations of state of compressed solids with emphasis on solid carbon as well as the current status of metal physics under ultrahigh pressure are discussed.
